Princess Charlotte of Denmark was a central figure at the Danish court in the 19th century, born into the royal family and married to Prince William of Hesse-Kassel. As the sister of Christian VIII and the aunt of Frederick VII, she held a prominent place in the kingdom’s dynastic affairs, taking an active role in the negotiations that determined the line of succession during a period marked by crises and international pressure. Residing in royal palaces in Copenhagen and at the summer estate in Charlottenlund, Charlotte was known for her practical, economical management of the princely household and for her interest in the arts and poetry. Her dynastic conservatism led her to oppose separatist movements in Schleswig–Holstein and to defend the continuity of her family’s line on the throne. In the decisive episode of 1851, she ultimately renounced, together with part of her descendants, succession claims in favor of the Glücksburg son-in-law, a solution that paved the way for the future succession of Christian IX. Her legacy reflects both domestic importance within the court apparatus and a role in the dynastic negotiations that shaped the modern Danish monarchy.
