Princess of Anhalt-Bernburg Luise (Wilhelmine Luise) was a German noblewoman of the House of Ascania who, by her 1817 marriage to Prince Frederick William Louis of Prussia, also became part of the Hohenzollern dynasty’s circles. Initially based in Berlin and later in Düsseldorf, the couple played an active role in promoting the arts and the city’s cultural life, sponsoring initiatives and expanding Rheinstein Castle.
Luise developed as an artist: she took drawing and painting lessons from figures such as Wilhelm Kaulbach and Theodor Hildebrandt, and produced numerous drawings and watercolours now held by the Düsseldorf City Museum. Her initiatives included the construction of St. Clement’s Church in Trechtingshausen and patronage of the girls’ school that came to be called the Luisenschule.
From 1843 she retired to Eller Castle to devote herself to painting, while maintaining ties with Düsseldorf’s cultural society. She suffered from a chronic neuropathy and a progressive mental condition inherited from her mother, closely followed with treatments and correspondence with the physician Samuel Hahnemann. She died at Schloss Eller in 1882 and was buried in the chapel crypt at Rheinstein Castle.
