Mary Henrietta Stuart was the Princess Royal of England and, by marriage to William II of Orange, Princess of Orange and Countess of Nassau. The eldest daughter of Charles I and Henrietta Maria of France, her position linked the houses of Stuart and Orange at a time of intense political and religious upheaval in the 17th century. Named the first Princess Royal in 1642, Mary became a central figure in diplomatic arrangements: her marriage to William II carried strategic implications for support of the English monarchy. Political changes — including the outbreak of the English Civil War — forced displacements and affected both her private and public life. In 1650 she gave birth to her only child, the future William III, whose custody she shared with her mother‑in‑law Amalia of Solms‑Braunfels amid personal tensions and mutual distrust. After the Restoration in 1660 she traveled to London for the celebrations, where she contracted smallpox and died. Mary was known for her grace and courtly education; her most enduring legacy is the dynastic link that enabled her son’s accession to the English throne, illustrating the intertwining of marital politics and royal succession in early modern Europe.
