Louis Armand de Bourbon was a French nobleman of the high aristocracy and titular Prince of Conti from 1709 until his death in 1727. The son of François Louis, Prince of Conti, and Marie Thérèse de Bourbon, he belonged to the Bourbon-Condé line and was granted the title Prince of Orange by King Louis XIV in 1712. Ill and of fragile health throughout his life, he took part in the War of the Spanish Succession under Marshal Villars, though he did not achieve the military distinction of his father; nonetheless he was appointed field marshal in 1713. He held civil and military offices, including governor of Poitou and a seat on the Council of Government and War. During the financial crisis tied to the Law bubble he found himself in a position of considerable economic advantage, which strengthened his patrimonial standing. He married Louise Élisabeth de Bourbon and had five children, only two of whom survived childhood, among them Louis François, his successor as Prince of Conti. His career reflects the role of princes of the House of Bourbon in the military and administrative institutions of the early-18th-century French monarchy, as well as the dynastic and health vulnerabilities that affected his branch.
