Gustav, Prince of Vasa, was the heir apparent to the Swedish crown at the end of the 18th and start of the 19th centuries, the eldest son of King Gustav IV Adolf and Frederica of Baden. His father's deposition in 1809 forced the family into exile and ended Gustav's dynastic prospects, an episode that shaped both his personal life and the political conflicts in Sweden during the Napoleonic era. In exile, Gustav pursued a military career in the Austrian Empire, reaching the rank of lieutenant field marshal in 1836. In 1829 he was granted the title Prince of Vasa by Emperor Francis I, an honorific recognition that reinforced his aristocratic standing outside Sweden. He married Princess Louise Amelie of Baden in 1830; the marriage ended in divorce in 1843 and only one child, Princess Carola, survived childhood. Although he remained excluded from the throne, his life illustrates the European dynastic networks of the period and the personal consequences of political change in northern Europe. His remains were transferred to Stockholm in 1884 and buried there beside his father, a gesture reflecting the preservation of dynastic memory even after years of exile.
