Christiane Eberhardine of Brandenburg‑Bayreuth was Electress of Saxony (1694–1727) and titular Queen of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth as the wife of Augustus II of Poland. A daughter of Margrave Christian Ernst of Brandenburg‑Bayreuth, she became known for steadfastly maintaining her Lutheran faith in a political context defined by her husband’s conversion to Catholicism and the religious tensions between Saxony and Poland. She refused to travel to Poland and was never crowned queen, earning among Protestant subjects the sobriquet “the prayerful pillar of Saxony.” She spent much of her life apart from her husband, residing at estates such as Hartenfels Castle in Torgau and Pretzsch, where she oversaw local affairs—including a glassworks—and devoted herself to cultural and charitable initiatives. Her devout religious stance and resistance to conversion made her a symbol of protection for Protestant faith in Saxony, an image reinforced by contemporary clerical accounts. She died in 1727; her memory was commemorated in art, notably in J. S. Bach’s cantata Laß, Fürstin, laß noch einen Strahl, BWV 198.
