Robert John Bardo is an American convicted of homicide, known for killing actress and model Rebecca Schaeffer on July 18, 1989, after stalking her for about three years. He came from a family with a history of mental illness, had a troubled childhood, a brief psychiatric hospitalization in adolescence and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder; he left school early and had prior incidents of aggressive behavior and arrests for domestic violence and disorderly conduct. Bardo developed obsessions with public figures before Schaeffer and, determined to find her, paid a private investigator to obtain her address from vehicle records. In Los Angeles he approached the actress at her door and shot her with a revolver; he was captured days later, extradited to California and tried in 1991. The defense argued mental illness; experts debated diagnoses such as schizophrenia, but the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder. Sentenced to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole, Bardo has served time in maximum-security prisons and was assaulted by another inmate in 2007. The case had legal and cultural effects: it helped prompt anti-stalking laws and restrictions on public access to vehicle registration records, and it inspired works of fiction about the stalking of celebrities.
