Sir Robert Stodart Lorimer was a Scottish architect and furniture designer whose work shaped early 20th-century domestic and commemorative architecture. Known for sensitive restorations of historic houses and castles, Lorimer also designed new buildings in the Scottish baronial and Gothic revival styles, integrating the aesthetics and methods of the Arts and Crafts movement. He gathered craftsmen and artists to create interiors, furniture, and gardens as unified elements of his projects. Over his career he took on larger commissions, designing new country houses — among them Ardkinglas, regarded as his principal work — and carrying out major interventions at properties such as Lennoxlove and Dunderave. He also worked on important public projects, notably the Knights of the Thistle chapel in St Giles and the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle. During and after the First World War he devoted himself to war memorials and cemeteries: he served as principal architect to the Imperial War Graves Commission and designed hundreds of memorials and cemeteries across the United Kingdom, Europe, and the Middle East, as well as the major naval memorials at Portsmouth, Plymouth, and Chatham. He was appointed KBE in recognition of this work. Lorimer’s legacy combines historic restoration, strongly individual residential architecture, and a decisive role in the memorial landscape created by the war.
