Roland Freisler was a German jurist whose career reached its height during the Nazi dictatorship. A lawyer and member of the Nazi Party, he became president of the Volksgerichtshof (People’s Court) in 1942, the regime’s tribunal for political crimes. In that post he became a central figure in the judicial repression of opponents of Nazism.
Freisler presided over trials notable for their didactic and spectacular character: rapid proceedings, public humiliation of the accused, and strong alignment with the political objectives of the government. Under his leadership thousands of death sentences were handed down, including verdicts against prominent members of the German resistance.
Freisler’s actions made him the most notorious judge of the Third Reich, and after the war his name came to symbolize the subversion of the legal system in service of a totalitarian state. He died in 1945 during a bombing raid in Berlin, leaving a legacy tied to the instrumentalization of justice for repressive ends.
