Salvatore Riina was the head of the Sicilian Cosa Nostra and the central figure in a campaign of violence that marked Italy from the 1970s through the 1990s. From Corleone, Riina rose to lead the Corleonesi and secured power through a systematic campaign of murders targeting rival mafiosi, state officials and civilians, culminating in the so‑called Second Mafia War. His methods violated traditional organized‑crime codes, including the killing of women and children to distract investigations. Under his leadership high‑profile crimes occurred, notably the murders of magistrates Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, which provoked public outrage, legal reforms and a tougher police and judicial response to the mafia. Sentenced to life imprisonment in the 1986 Maxi Trial and a fugitive for more than two decades, Riina was captured in 1993; his organization responded with attacks on cultural and religious sites. Unwavering in his stance, Riina served his sentence under a strict prison regime until his death in 2017. The legacy of his leadership lies not only in extreme violence but also in the institutional impact of his actions: increased state mobilization, legislative changes and greater public awareness of the fight against organized crime in Italy.
