Sanger D. "Whitey" Shafer was an American songwriter and musician whose work shaped country music from the 1960s through the 2000s. Based in Nashville from 1967, he signed with major publishers and established himself as the writer of hits recorded by artists such as George Jones, Lefty Frizzell and, especially, George Strait. Shafer wrote songs that reached the top of the charts, including notable co-writes like "Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind" and "All My Ex's Live in Texas"—the latter, written with his wife Lyndia Shafer, earned nominations for the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year. He also collaborated with Lefty Frizzell on enduring songs such as "That's the Way Love Goes" and "I Never Go Around Mirrors." In addition to writing, he released two albums featuring his own versions of his songs and continued working as a lyricist in later decades, supplying material to artists such as John Michael Montgomery, Lee Ann Womack and Kenny Chesney. His contribution was recognized in 1989 with induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Shafer's legacy lives on in the American country tradition through songs that became standards in the repertoire and influenced later generations.
