Simone Weber was a central figure in one of France’s most high‑profile criminal cases of the 1980s–1990s. Accused of the disappearance and subsequent murder of her former lover Bernard Hettier, Weber was arrested in November 1985 and, after an extensive investigation marked by expert examinations and material traces, tried in 1991. The court found her guilty of having dismembered the victim’s body with an angle grinder and sentenced her to twenty years’ imprisonment, although she consistently denied committing the crime.
The case exposed a past marked by false identities and fraud: Weber became known for staging a sham marriage in an attempt to obtain an inheritance and for using forged documents. The inquiry also revealed complicated family ties, her sister’s complicity in concealing evidence, and a chain of indirect evidence (objects, traces and testimony) that supported the prosecution.
The case generated widespread press coverage, several books and television programmes, making Weber a controversial figure and a focal point in debates about criminal evidence, the media and trials in the public eye. Released in 1999 after fourteen years in custody, she maintained her claim of innocence to the end, leaving a conflicted place in the French public memory.
