Spiro Theodore Agnew was an American lawyer and politician who served as Vice President of the United States from 1969 to 1973 alongside Richard Nixon. Before that, he rose in Maryland state politics, serving as Baltimore County Executive and then being elected governor in 1966, a post he held until joining the Republican presidential ticket in 1968.
Known for a “law and order” stance during civil unrest and for combative speeches that appealed to conservative voters, Agnew built a public image as a defender of the government against critics and opponents. His rhetoric and political position were important elements of Nixon’s electoral strategy, contributing to the 1968 victory and the 1972 reelection.
Agnew’s career ended in scandal: federal investigations revealed he accepted kickbacks from contractors while serving as county executive and governor, practices that continued during his vice presidency. In 1973 he pleaded nolo contendere to a charge of tax evasion and resigned, succeeded by Gerald Ford. After leaving public life, he moved to California, wrote a memoir and a novel, and lived privately until his death in 1996.
