Susan Howlet Butcher was an American musher whose career changed public perception of sled-dog racing in Alaska. She became known as the second woman to win the Iditarod, in 1986, and the first to claim four victories in five years (1986, 1987, 1988 and 1990), setting speed records in the race and in regional marathons such as the Norton Sound 250, Kobuk 220 and Kuskokwim 300. Her competitive success and the media coverage of the 1980s made her a central figure in the sport. A native of Cambridge, Massachusetts, she trained as a veterinary technician and moved to the Wrangell Mountains region to devote herself to breeding and training huskies. She worked with Joe Redington, founder of the Iditarod, and took part in milestones such as the first ascent of Denali with a dog sled in 1979. In addition to her sporting achievements, she received national awards and institutional recognition, including induction into the Alaska Sports Hall of Fame and the establishment of “Susan Butcher Day” in Alaska. Retiring from competition in 1995, she left a legacy in the improvement of teams and mushing techniques and in raising the visibility of women in the sport.
