Terence Kemp McKenna was an American writer, speaker and ethnobotanist known for his research into and advocacy of natural psychedelics, especially psilocybin mushrooms, ayahuasca and DMT. Over decades of travel in Asia and South America, he developed theories about shamanism, language, consciousness and the relationship between visionary plants and culture, becoming a central figure in the counterculture of the 1980s and 1990s. McKenna became known for popularizing mushroom cultivation techniques and for works that blend field reports, philosophical speculation and cultural history — including accounts of his Amazonian expeditions with his brother Dennis. His proposal of the so‑called “Novelty Theory” and the well‑known “stoned ape” hypothesis illustrate his speculative and influential approach. Reception of his work was polarized: some praised him as a provocative thinker who coined cultural language for visionary experience; others criticized him for lack of rigor and for controversial ideas. He left contemporary culture a body of work that has stimulated debates about psychedelics, spirituality and ecology, and that continues to influence countercultural movements and psychedelic research.
