Tom Weiskopf was an American professional golfer who rose to prominence in the 1960s and 1970s and later established a career as a golf course architect. In competition he won 16 main-tour events between 1968 and 1982, the highlight being the 1973 Open Championship at Royal Troon; that year he also recorded seven tour victories and was ranked the world’s second-best player. He finished runner-up at the Masters four times and represented the United States on the Ryder Cup teams of 1973 and 1975.
Known for a wide swing and his height, which earned him the nickname “The Towering Inferno,” Weiskopf also worked as an on-air commentator for golf broadcasts. As a senior player he won events on the Senior Tour, including the U.S. Senior Open in 1995.
After ending his playing career he founded a design firm and was credited with at least 40 courses worldwide, with notable works such as the Monument and Pinnacle courses at Troon North (Arizona) and Loch Lomond (Scotland). Many of his designs received high marks in specialist rankings, and signature features—including the drivable par-4—characterized his work.
He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2020 and died in 2022. In recognition of his career he was elected to the World Golf Hall of Fame and formally inducted in 2024.
