Koose Muniswamy Veerappan was an Indian bandit who operated for more than three decades in the forests and scrublands between Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. Initially involved in poaching and in the smuggling of sandalwood and ivory, he became the leader of a group responsible for dozens of killings of police officers, forest guards and civilians, as well as the deaths of hundreds of elephants and the large-scale smuggling of timber and ivory. His notoriety grew through high-profile kidnappings, including that of Kannada film star Rajkumar in 2000, and of politicians, which he used to pressure governments and extract ransoms or political concessions. Efforts to capture him mobilized special forces from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, involving joint operations, arrests of associates and intensive security measures along the interstate border. The conflict with the state had heavy human and financial costs: many officers died in ambushes attributed to his group, and the police campaign consumed considerable resources. Veerappan remains a controversial figure in regional history—remembered both for the violence and environmental damage of his actions and for the prolonged challenge he posed to law enforcement.
