Walter Buch was a jurist of the National Socialist Party who, from 1927 to 1945, led the party’s internal disciplinary body responsible for investigating and adjudicating conflicts and infractions within the organization. An early member of the Nazi movement, as well as of the SA and the SS, he took part in the Beer Hall Putsch and held regional leadership positions, becoming a trusted figure to Adolf Hitler in the movement’s first decades.
Without formal legal training, Buch was appointed head of the committee for investigation and conciliation in 1927, a post he transformed into the party’s supreme court after the seizure of power in 1933. Known for favoring longtime comrades as judges, he exercised strong influence over internal discipline, handling cases ranging from moral incompatibilities to expulsions from the organization, although his rulings ultimately required the Führer’s approval.
During the 1930s Buch was involved in key episodes, such as the inquiries into SA leadership after the Night of the Long Knives, but his persistence in prosecuting powerful figures on moral grounds eventually diminished his prestige and autonomy. After 1942 he served largely in a ceremonial capacity until the regime’s collapse. Classified as an important official of the regime after the war, he was released in 1949 and committed suicide shortly thereafter.
