Walter Heinrich Heitler was a German physicist whose work was at the core of twentieth-century theoretical physics, with significant contributions to quantum electrodynamics and quantum field theory. He is particularly remembered for introducing chemistry to the framework of quantum mechanics through his valence-bond theory of the chemical bond, which helped link quantum methods to explanations of molecular structures and bonds.
Over the course of his career he published influential works, among them The Quantum Theory of Radiation and Elementary Wave Mechanics, books that were widely used and reissued in several languages and editions. His output also includes lectures and essays on fundamental problems in particle physics and on the application of wave mechanics to chemistry.
Beyond his scientific activity, Heitler reflected on science, philosophy and religion, publishing essays on the meaning of evolution, the relationship between nature and divinity and the nature of scientific knowledge. He took part in major scientific events, such as the 8th Solvay Conference (1948), consolidating his place among the theorists of his generation.
His legacy lies both in his technical contributions to quantum theory and in the educational influence of his books and the interdisciplinary bridge between physics and chemistry that he helped establish.
