William Haines was an American actor who rose to prominence as a leading man of silent cinema and became one of the top box-office draws from the late 1920s into the early 1930s. Discovered in 1922, he signed with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and established his persona as a sarcastic, cocky young man with the success of Brown of Harvard (1926), repeating the formula in popular films such as Little Annie Rooney and Show People. Haines also made the transition to sound films, appearing in productions like Alias Jimmy Valentine and Navy Blues.

Haines’s film career was marked by popular recognition — he ranked among the five biggest box-office stars from 1928 to 1932 — but suffered a setback in the 1930s due to studio pressure regarding his private life. After leaving acting in 1935, Haines reinvented himself as an interior designer, forming a professional and personal partnership with Jimmie Shields. Their firm attracted clients in Hollywood, and he built a successful second career.

Haines’s legacy is twofold: as a symbol of late silent-era cinema and as an example of personal resilience in the face of the social and industrial norms of his time. His life illustrates both the peak of a movie star and the constraints placed on artists whose private lives clashed with public expectations.
