Anna Seghers (born Netty Reiling) was a German writer whose work shaped twentieth-century literature by probing moral dilemmas in the face of totalitarianism and war. Trained in history, art history and sinology, she worked early on in both essay and fiction, debuting with pieces signed simply “Seghers” and consolidating herself under the pseudonym that made her famous. A communist activist from 1928, her life was marked by exile during the rise of Nazism: she lived in Mexico, France and other countries, founded antifascist initiatives and wrote works of considerable impact. Her best-known novel, The Seventh Cross (Das siebte Kreuz), depicts the escape of prisoners from a concentration camp and was adapted for cinema in the United States, becoming one of the few representations of the subject during World War II. After returning to Germany she settled in Berlin and took part in cultural life in East Germany, receiving notable awards and holding institutional positions. Recurring themes in her work include memory, the loss of innocence and individual responsibility in times of political violence. Her output includes novels, short stories and essays that continue to influence debates on art, resistance and ethical commitment.
