Gertrude Maria Gisela Elisabeth Ignatia of Habsburg was a member of the Austrian imperial family, born in Wallsee‑Sindelburg in 1900. She was the daughter of Archduke Franz Salvator of Austria and Archduchess Marie Valerie, and a granddaughter of Emperor Franz Joseph I, thus belonging to central branches of the Habsburg‑Lorraine dynasty in the post‑monarchical period. On 29 December 1931 she married in Bad Ischl Georg of Waldburg‑Zeil‑Hohenems, who had previously been married to Gertrude’s sister. The marriage produced two children, Sophia and Joseph, maintaining family ties between the traditional nobilities of Austria and Germany. Gertrude’s life unfolded in the historical context of the transformation of European royal houses after the First World War, when many members of the aristocracy sought to reorganize dynastic ties and adapt socially. She died in Ravensburg, in what was then West Germany, in 1962, leaving descendants who preserved the connections of her family branch.
