Daniel Ortega is a Nicaraguan politician, leader of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) since the 1960s and a central figure in the country’s politics for decades. A revolutionary who joined the Junta of National Reconstruction after Somoza’s fall in 1979, he served as president from 1985 to 1990 and returned to power in 2007, being re-elected in 2011, 2016, and 2021. His career combines social initiatives — such as literacy campaigns, expanded health services, and poverty-reduction programs — with a growing consolidation of executive power.
During his terms, Ortega promoted agrarian reform, social programs, and infrastructure investments that affected indicators like literacy and access to basic services. At the same time, his government has been accused by international organizations and much of the press of authoritarian practices: repression of protests, imprisonment of opponents, restrictions on the press, and tensions with the Catholic Church.
These elements have placed Ortega at the center of an international debate about democracy and human rights in Nicaragua. His legacy is therefore marked both by social advances in certain periods and by controversies and allegations of violations of public freedoms, which shape domestic and international perceptions of his administration.
