Dara Singh was an Indian professional wrestler, actor and politician, regarded as one of the most iconic figures of wrestling in India during the 1950s and 1960s. He gained international recognition by defeating established names on the circuit and won the world title in 1968 by beating Lou Thesz. His sporting career includes victories in national tournaments such as the Rustam-e-Hind and the Commonwealth Championship title.
In film, he appeared in more than a hundred Hindi and Punjabi movies, often playing strong, heroic and religious characters. He became particularly well known for his role as Hanuman in the televised adaptation of the Ramayan and for performances in epic productions in which he portrayed figures such as Bhima and Shiva. He also directed regional productions and founded his own production company and studio, leaving a mark on the film industry of northern India.
In public life he entered politics with the Bharatiya Janata Party and was the first sportsperson appointed to the Rajya Sabha, where he served from 2003 to 2009. He received the Padma Shri in 1996 and was later commemorated with posthumous inductions into wrestling halls of fame.
His legacy combines popularity as an action star and television folk hero with the pioneering achievement of translating sporting prestige into India’s political and cultural arenas.
