Ferdinand de Lesseps was a French diplomat and businessman whose career became closely associated with the great communication works of the 19th century. Trained in diplomacy and connected to European elites, he served on several missions in the Mediterranean and North Africa; in Alexandria he encountered the idea of linking the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, a project that would come to define his life.

As promoter and organizer of the Suez Canal, Lesseps established himself as an international figure when the work was completed in 1869; it transformed trade routes and strengthened European presence in the Middle East. His reputation as “Le Grand Français” stems from this ambition to interconnect peoples and shorten distances for the benefit of commerce and industry.

He later led the attempt to build the Panama Canal, an undertaking that ended in financial collapse and scandal. That failure resulted in his criminal conviction, although he did not serve a prison term for health reasons.

Lesseps’s legacy is ambivalent: celebrated for the success at Suez and for advancing global communications, he is also marked by the controversial and disastrous Panama venture, which influenced late-19th-century debates on financing, engineering, and corporate responsibility.
