George Blake, born George Behar, was a British spy notorious for acting as a double agent for the Soviet Union in the 1950s and 1960s. Recruited by British intelligence during World War II, Blake began passing secret information to the Soviets, motivated by communist convictions he said deepened after experiences during the Korean War. His double role was discovered only in 1961, when he received an exceptional 42-year prison sentence. In 1966 he escaped from Wormwood Scrubs prison, fled first to East Germany and then to the Soviet Union, where he lived in Moscow for decades and received a pension granted to him as a former collaborator. Among his acts of greatest impact was revealing details of Operation Gold, the secret tunnel dug by the CIA and MI6 in Berlin, whose detection allowed the Soviets to manipulate communications for nearly a year. Blake maintained a controversial public stance: he said he did not consider himself a traitor, identified as a Marxist–Leninist activist, and acknowledged feeling bad about the deaths of agents whose exposure his collaboration helped bring about. He died in Moscow in December 2020, leaving a controversial place in the history of intelligence and East–West relations during the Cold War.
