Maria Eleonora of Brandenburg was a German princess who became Queen Consort of Sweden by her marriage to Gustav II Adolf (married in 1620). Daughter of Elector John Sigismund of Brandenburg, her union with the Swedish king carried a strong dynastic and political purpose, negotiated between courts and marked by family resistance and tensions involving Brandenburg, Prussia and Poland. As queen she was known for refined tastes — an interest in music and architecture — and for an emotional, extravagant personality that made her popular with some foreigners while drawing criticism at court. Her life was marked by difficulty adapting to the Swedish climate and customs, reliance on the company of German ladies-in-waiting, and by ill health and interrupted pregnancies. Maria Eleonora was the mother of Christina of Sweden; her relationship with Gustav Adolf was affectionate but turbulent, and the king himself expressed doubts about his wife's political aptitude should she become a widow. Her story brings together elements of northern European dynastic alliances and the personal and diplomatic constraints inherent to seventeenth-century courts.
