Nathan Freudenthal Leopold Jr. became notorious as one of two young students—alongside Richard Loeb—responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Bobby Franks in 1924, a crime that shocked the United States and was dubbed one of the “trials of the century.” Born into affluent Chicago families, both were intellectually gifted; Leopold, a prodigy, had already graduated and was studying law, and pursued interests such as languages and ornithology. The case drew massive public attention because of its meticulous planning and the defendants’ claim that they sought to carry out a “perfect crime,” allegedly inspired by philosophical readings.
