Mafalda Maria Elisabetta Anna Romana of Savoy was a princess of the House of Savoy, the daughter of King Victor Emmanuel III of Italy and Elena of Montenegro. Known for her interest in the arts and for her charitable work during World War I, she maintained a public role tied to the Italian royal family and European aristocratic traditions. In 1925 she married Prince Philip of Hesse-Cassel, a union that had political repercussions in the context of relations between Fascist Italy and Nazi Germany. Despite family and diplomatic ties, Mafalda held positions opposed to Nazi ideals, which brought her into conflict with German authorities during World War II. After the fall of the Fascist government in Italy and the German occupation, Mafalda was arrested by the Gestapo and transferred to the Buchenwald concentration camp. During an Allied bombing raid in August 1944 she suffered severe injuries; those wounds and subsequent complications led to her death in the camp. Mafalda’s death had symbolic resonance in postwar Italy and was commemorated in various forms of public memory, including postal issues and media portrayals. Her fate is often cited as an example of prominent victims of Nazi repression and of the human cost of the alliances and conflicts that shaped wartime Europe.
