Susanna Kaysen is an American writer best known for the memoir Girl, Interrupted, in which she recounts her psychiatric hospitalization in the 1960s and her diagnosis of borderline personality disorder. Published in 1993, the account became a touchstone for discussions of clinical experience and the stigma surrounding mental health, reaching a wide audience and gaining cultural impact through the 1999 film adaptation starring Winona Ryder. The daughter of economist Carl Kaysen, who had academic ties to Harvard and MIT, Susanna grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and also lived for a time in the Faroe Islands—experiences that inspired the novel Far Afield (1990). Her personal and literary life weaves together memory, social observation, and reflections on identity and psychiatric treatment. In addition to Girl, Interrupted, her work includes titles such as Asa, As I Knew Him (1987), The Camera My Mother Gave Me (2001) and the novel Cambridge (2014).
