Werner Karl Ferdinand von Rheinbaben was a German diplomat, politician and journalist whose career spanned the Empire, the Weimar Republic, the Nazi period and the Federal Republic. He entered the naval service at the end of the 19th century and moved into the diplomatic service before the First World War, serving on missions in several European capitals and delivering the German ultimatum to the Belgian government in 1914, an act connected with the start of operations on the Western Front. During the Weimar Republic he became prominent as a member of parliament for the German People’s Party (DVP) and as head of the German delegation to meetings after Germany joined the League of Nations. He was a close collaborator of Gustav Stresemann and an informal adviser to Kurt von Schleicher, working on revising the obligations of the Treaty of Versailles and on conciliatory foreign‑policy initiatives with France. With the Nazi rise to power he experienced political marginalization; in 1933 he formally announced Germany’s withdrawal from the League of Nations and later assumed an ambiguous stance—maintaining international contacts and public statements aligned with the regime, although personal accounts record private reservations. After 1945 he devoted himself to writing memoirs and studies of German foreign policy, leaving documentary work of significance on the country’s transformations in the 20th century.
