Wilhelm Dilthey was a German philosopher and humanist whose work shaped debates about the so-called “human sciences.” A professor at universities including Basel, Kiel, and Berlin, he developed research spanning hermeneutics, psychology, history, sociology, and pedagogy. He sought to distinguish methods: he criticized applying techniques from the natural sciences to the study of human life and defended a distinct methodology based on understanding (Verstehen) the historical-cultural meanings of human expressions.

Dilthey formulated a philosophy of life (Lebensphilosophie), emphasizing lived experience (Erlebnis) as the source of subjective meaning and stressing historicity as constitutive of human life. He argued that the human sciences should pursue the uniqueness of historical events and the interconnection of cultural manifestations rather than abstract general laws.

Among his most influential works are Introduction to the Study of the Human Sciences (Einleitung in die Geisteswissenschaften), writings on hermeneutics, and studies of the history of the German spirit. His theses on method and historicity provoked lasting debates in philosophy and the human sciences, influencing discussions of interpretation, culture, and the status of historical knowledge.
